Evolving with Purpose: 25 Years of Workforce Innovation

In 2000, Year Up United began with a bold but simple belief: that talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. With just 22 students and a model built on technical training, wraparound support, and internship experience, Year Up United launched what would become a national force in workforce development.

Twenty-five years later, the model that started it all has grown into a proven, evidence-backed engine of upward mobility for tens of thousands of young adults. But perhaps more striking than the scale we have achieved is how we have evolved – consistently and intentionally – without compromising the integrity of what works.

Staying the Course – While Shifting the Model

At its core, Year Up United has remained focused on a simple, powerful premise: provide high-quality technical training, wraparound supports, and real-world internship experience to young adults historically excluded from opportunity. This formula has been validated not only by participant outcomes, but by a multi-year randomized controlled trial, which found a 30% wage gain six years post-program compared to a control group.

But achieving this kind of impact at scale required more than fidelity – it required evolution.

We have continuously adapted its delivery model to meet the changing needs of both participants and the labor market, introducing innovations like:

  • Community college partnerships to expand geographic and economic access

  • Hybrid and virtual program options to accommodate more students and employers

  • Working within school districts to help prepare students earlier for the world ahead of them.

These innovations in delivery weren’t about convenience or trends – they are about meeting young adults where they are. By embedding programs in existing institutions and offering more flexible formats, Year Up removed barriers that previously kept some from participating. To date, 17,000 of the 50,000 young adults we have served have been reached through a community college partnership – a testament to how innovation can be both strategic and deeply mission-aligned.

Despite these shifts, we have never lost sight of what matters most: the experience of the young adults we serve. Innovation has gone hand-in-hand with an unwavering commitment to the core components that make Year Up United what it is. That means we will always center the holistic, unique needs of young adults, leverage real-time data and insights to inform decision-making, and continually steward a deep bench of employer partners to ensure we are preparing our students with the in-demand skills needed to excel in professional careers.

Alumni in Action: Tarcizio’s Story

For Tarcizio Goncalves Jr., the program's evolution didn’t just open doors—it reshaped his identity. After immigrating to the U.S. at 16, Tarcizio faced language barriers, financial stress, and an uncertain path forward. Year Up helped him find not only a career, but a sense of belonging.

“Year Up didn’t just prepare me for a job—it showed me that I had value, that I belonged in these spaces,” he says. “They evolved the program to meet us where we are, without lowering the bar. That’s powerful.”

Now a Senior Associate at a major financial firm, Tarcizio credits Year Up’s ability to adapt—while holding fast to its high expectations—as a key reason he was able to succeed.

Designing for the Future of Work

As the economy continues to evolve, so too does our approach. We have introduced training tracks in areas like data analytics, cybersecurity, and healthcare operations – fields where demand is growing and opportunities for upward mobility are strong. These decisions are never made in a vacuum. We consult with employer partners, leverage labor market data, and seek alumni feedback to determine where our model can do the most good.

We know that our job is not only to create strong outcomes for individuals. We are building a scalable infrastructure for economic justice by holding tight to the core principles that have always driven success, and being bold enough to adapt to changing conditions.

Twenty-five years in, Year Up United is more than a successful program. It’s a continually evolving solution to one of our country’s most persistent challenges: how to connect untapped talent to meaningful economic opportunity.

Meet Adam - A Graduate From Our First Class

Boston - Digital Production Specialist, Tufts University

Adam Wladyszewski grew up in Dorchester, MA, and was finishing his GED when he first learned about Year Up United enrolling the first class of young adults. Unsure of his next steps, he was drawn to the program after a presentation at his school. With a natural interest in computers and Microsoft Office applications, Year Up United seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore a career in technology. Encouraged by his parents and guidance counselor, he applied and took a leap toward his future. During the program, he gained valuable technical skills in web programming, but the most impactful lessons were the soft skills, such as giving and receiving constructive feedback, teamwork, and time management, that prepared him for long-term success.

Adam's career took off at the company where he completed his internship, where he spent nearly 17 years growing from an intern to a full-time front end web developer. His dedication and work ethic led to an unexpected opportunity. When he planned to relocate in 2007, he was offered a remote position, a rare option at the time. That experience set the stage for his current role as a Digital Production Specialist at a leading university. Reflecting on his journey, Adam considers Year Up United the best professional decision of his life, crediting the program for opening doors he never thought possible and setting the foundation for a fulfilling career.

Meet Sabrina - A 2016 Graduate

Bay Area - Senior Internal Auditor, PayPal

Sabrina Flores grew up in the resilient agricultural community of Soledad, California, where she learned the value of hard work. After moving to San Jose for college, she worked multiple jobs, such as a caregiver, security officer, and a valet at a tech company, to make ends meet. Despite her hard work, Sabrina felt uncertain about her future and was at a crossroads when a coworker introduced her to Year Up United, a program that opened the door to a career she never dreamed was possible. Year Up United was a turning point, providing foundational IT skills and essential corporate etiquette, which helped prepare her for her internship at PayPal. Sabrina credits Year Up United for not just teaching her skills but seeing her potential and putting her in a position where she would flourish.

Nine years after starting her internship at PayPal, Sabrina Flores has established herself as a SOX Technology Auditor and earned the admiration of PayPal CEO Dan Schulman, who recognized her as "an integral member of our team." Sabrina’s journey has been one of growth, driven by her determination to learn as much as possible and her ability to build relationships within the company. A member of PayPal’s Aliados resource group, she supports efforts that promote inclusivity and community. Looking ahead, she hopes her story inspires others and challenges fellow Year Up United alumni and community members to stand together and lift as they climb in corporate America to further advance the skills-first movement.
